When calling a locksmith you may be asked about the type of lock that your door is equipped with. We have compiled a list of the most common models of locks used in the UK to help you identify the model of your locking mechanism.
Mortice locks
Mortice locks have the body of the lock fitted inside the door material as opposed to other lock types that are attached to the surface of the door. Mortice locks are often fitted inside wooden (timber) doors and they can be opened with a key from both inside and outside.
The name for these locks comes from the special pocket - mortise - that has to be cut inside the door canvas where the lock is installed.
Yale locks
Yale locks are surface-mounted locks. The name is derived from the Yale manufacturer which is considered to be the oldest lock manufacturer the UK and is very popular in this countryA . Yale lock is installed on the inner part of the door and it is very convenient to use because it automatically latches the door shut after you close the door behind you. Hence the second name of Yale locks is latch locks or night latches.
Euro Cylinder locks
Euro cylinders can be fitted into any material - wooden or aluminum doors but most commonly they are found in UPVC and composite doors. They have a cylindric shape and the locking mechanism consists of several pins (up to 12) and a revolving cam that moves the bolts and locks the door.
Euro cylinder locks are frequently used on the external front and back doors but sometimes you see them on interior doors and bathroom doors.
What makes them popular is that you replace a euro cylinder without removing other parts of the lock.
multipoint locking system
Multipoint locking system is an advanced locking mechanism that is using 3 or more deadbolts to lock a door, controlled by a single lock. Usually, extra deadbolts are installed at the top, bottom and in the middle of the door which gives extra safety.
Unlike older locks, where each bolt has to be turned with a separate lock, a multipoint system requires just one single key to close all of the deadbolts at once.
